National Taxpayers Union: Only Ron Paul Would Cut Spending

Other Republicans would increase spending by billions

According to a report released Tuesday by the National Taxpayers Union, Texas Congressman Ron Paul is the only remaining presidential candidate who proposes net spending cuts.

According to the report, Congressman Paul’s proposals would cut government spending by over $150 billion, a conservative estimate of the spending reductions Dr. Paul has proposed. The report concludes that the other remaining Republican candidates, Mitt Romney, John McCain and Mike Huckabee, have proposed spending increases of $19.5 billion, $6.9 billion and $54 billion respectively.

“It should come as no surprise that when you crunch the numbers Ron Paul is the only Republican who would actually shrink the size and cost of the federal government,” said Ron Paul campaign economic advisor Don Luskin. “Romney, McCain and Huckabee don’t hold a candle to Ron Paul – the only true fiscal conservative running for President.”

In ten terms in Congress, Ron Paul has never voted for a tax increase or for an unbalanced budget. The National Taxpayers Union study can be found at www.ntu.org

Ron Paul: The 2008 Federal Budget

The fiscal year 2008 budget, passed in the House of Representatives last week, is a monument to irresponsibility and profligacy.  It shows that Congress remains oblivious to the economic troubles facing the nation, and that political expediency trumps all common sense in Washington.  To the extent that proponents and supporters of these unsustainable budget increases continue to win reelection, it also shows that many Americans unfortunately continue to believe government can provide them with a free lunch. To summarize, Congress proposes spending roughly $3 trillion in 2008.  When I first came to Congress in 1976, the federal government spent only about $300 billion.  So spending has increased tenfold in thirty years, and tripled just since 1990. Working Americans like lower taxes. So do I. Lower taxes benefit all of us, creating jobs and allowing us to make more decisions for ourselves about our lives.

Whether a tax cut reduces a single mother’s payroll taxes by $40 a month or allows a business owner to save thousands in capital gains taxes and hire more employees, that tax cut is a good thing. Lower taxes allow more spending, saving, and investing which helps the economy — that means all of us. (more…)

April 28, 1998 Press Release – Ron Paul’s “28th Amendment”

Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States relative to abolishing personal income, estate, and gift taxes and prohibiting the United States Government from engaging in business in competition with its citizens and abide by the US constitution.Calling it necessary for the promotion of individual liberty and limited government, U.S. Rep. Ron Paul has introduced what should be 28th Amendment to the US Constitution; HJ116, the Liberty Amendment.

“Over the years this amendment has enjoyed widespread support and has been introduced several times in the past by various Members of Congress, but finally this measure has a chance of success given the conservative Congress and mood of the country in favor of a more limited, constitutional government which respects individual liberty,” said Paul after introducing the measure Tuesday night.

The amendment will not only prohibit the federal government from participating in activities not specifically authorized in the Constitution, essentially strengthening the existing Ninth and Tenth Amendments, but will repeal the 16th Amendment. The 16th allowed for the collection of income taxes.

“The income tax is the most regressive tax imaginable, allowing government to take first claim on our lives. The income tax assumes government owns us, as individuals, and has a sovereign claim to the fruits of our labor. This is immoral. But government has been compelled to levy this economically damaging tax because government has grown so big. By reducing the size of the federal government to those functions strictly enumerated in the Constitution, there will no longer be a need for the income tax,” said Paul.

Paul concluded, “Once again, Americans are being treated to hearings on the abuses of the IRS. For as abusive as the IRS is, it is in fact simply the predictable result of the underlying income tax. By eliminating the income tax, we will go a long way toward eliminating these abuses.”

The Liberty Amendment has evolved over a period of years, beginning in 1952 with introduction of Section 1 by Rep. Ralph Gwinn of New York. The amendment, or a form of it, has been supported by more than a dozen Member of Congress, including Rep. Chris Cox (R-Calif) in 1993 (to end federal estate and gift taxes) and Rep. Sam Johnson (R-TX) in 1996 (to repeal the 16th Amendment). Rep. Paul lent support to the Liberty Amendment in 1981, when he introduced the measure with several other Members, during the 97th Congress.
